Funding for disability support: about the NDIS

If you live with a disability in Australia, there are many different types of funding you can get for support.

One of the most common ways to access support is through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

If you are eligible for the NDIS, you will get a budget which you can use for services and/or support to help achieve personal goals.

What is the NDIS?

The NDIS supports people with disability living in Australia to live their best life and achieve their goals.

Who is eligible for the NDIS?

To be eligible for the NDIS, you must:

  • be younger than 65 years old
  • be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a protected special category visa
  • have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to participate in everyday activities.
Can young children access the NDIS?

Yes. Children with disabilities or developmental delay can get funding for support through the NDIS.

We can help you and your child to understand, apply for, and manage funding through the NDIS if they are eligible.

How do I apply for the NDIS?

What will happen when I apply for the NDIS?

Here is a basic overview of what happens when you apply for the NDIS. Your Local Area Coordinator can help and guide you through every step of this process.

  1. You will need to collect evidence of your disability, usually from a doctor or another healthcare professional.
  2. An access request will be submitted to the NDIS.
  3. The National Disability Insurance Agency (the people who run the NDIS) will review your access request.
  4. You will be informed whether you can access the NDIS.
  5. If you are eligible, we will meet with you. This is where you talk about your goals and the support need to achieve them.
  6. You will create a plan to achieve your goals.
  7. If your plan is approved, you will receive your budget to get the services and support that will help you achieve your goals.
  8. Use your funding and work towards your goal.
  9. Review your plan and adjust if needed.
